One-Gauge Casting System

The one-gauge casting system is another method that is used to make casts. To use this system, one gauge of plaster should be mixed with size. The size slows down the setting time of the plaster. Cover the whole mould with one coat of plaster using a brush to brush it on, then splash on a coat of plaster. Strike off any excess plaster from the edges. To stiffen up the plaster in the back of the mould, make a canvas with dry plaster in it and dust it on. Strike off the excess again. Carefully place the canvas into the mould and carry on casting. There are a few advantages of using the one-gauge casting system such as there will no be no problems with different rates of swelling between the first and second mixes of plaster, which can cause the first coat to break up into the second coat. Another advantage is that if size used throughout, the cast will be stronger at the face. A disadvantages of using the one-gauge system is that you have to be extremely careful that no pressure is applied to the canvas because you do not want it being pressed through to the face of the cast.
