Repairs to Fibrous Plasterwork

Repairs to the damaged face of fibrous plasterwork may be either a cornice or a plain face slab ceiling. Simple Repairs First of all you need to look at the damage to the cast and see if it just the surface of the cast or if the body of the cast has been damaged. If it is just the surface that has been damaged that it can be repaired fairly easily. Using a small tool or a sharp knife, you will need to carefully remove the damaged area. Do not use a hammer of any kind because you will just cause more damage. For repairing, you will need small tools, joint rules and tool brush, small bowl to mix, bucket for water, casting plaster and PVA glue. Make sure these are all ready before starting. You should always make sure that the area you are working in is protected by laying sheets on the floor/over furniture, protecting wallpaper or any other décor close to the working area. Remove the damaged area and then brush off any loose plasterwork. Next, you should put some watered down PVA glue into a bowl and brush it on to the required area. Plaster then needs to be mixed up in a bowl making sure you use the correct ratios. You do not want the plaster to be too wet or too stiff. When the PVA is still a little bit sticky, use a small tool to apply your plaster onto the area that is being repaired. Follow the shape of the mould either side of the damaged area with a joint rule. If the plaster is drying out too quickly, you can use a tool brush. Do not use a tool brush if it is not necessary because too much can leave marks.
