Set the Gauge Before the First Mix

Confirm the specified product, coat, background and ratio before production starts. Accurate gauging reduces incorrect ratios, which can lead to poor surface finishes, variable strength and colour in mixes . For bagged renders or plasters, keep the water-to-material ratio constant; predictable setting depends on it, even though weather will still shorten or lengthen the set .

Use the same gauge bucket, clean water and measured additive dose for every batch. Do not allow “a splash more” plasticiser or water by eye: too much or too little additive can reduce strength and adhesion .

Check Materials Before Blaming the Plasterer

A mix that changes halfway through the day often starts in the storage area. Sand left uncovered can become contaminated or bulked by rainwater, making volume gauging unreliable . Cement stored damp, out of date or lumpy can give a weak set and a powdery, soft surface .

Quality checkpoint: reject dirty water, lumpy bags and wet, unprotected sand before they reach the mixer.

Read the Wall as the Mix Goes On

If the mix is too wet, expect slumping, blistering risk, slow pull-in and weak surface finish. If it is too dry or hanging around too long, it will drag, tear and encourage open texture. High suction can pull moisture out too quickly, causing fine crazing; low suction can leave the coat poorly bonded, leading to slumping or delamination .

Hold a small trial area, then check: adhesion, pull-in time, ruled flatness and surface tightness before releasing full production.

Safety Notes for Supervisors

Keep mixing areas ventilated and control dust exposure; suitable respiratory protection is advised when mixing plasters . Cement and lime products are alkaline, so enforce gloves, eye protection and clean wash water on the spot. Under COSHH, dusts and chemical products used on site must be controlled to reduce exposure and prevent ill health .
