For site supervisors, crack prevention starts before the hawk is loaded. In changeable UK conditions, backing plaster and render work needs close control of substrate, suction, mix, thickness and drying so the background is strong, reliable and ready for finishing.
Read the Weather Before You Start
Mixed weather is the risk zone: cold mornings, bright sun, wind, showers and rapid temperature swings can all pull moisture unevenly from backing coats.
Before work begins, check that backgrounds are clean, sound and suitably keyed. High-suction masonry may need damping down; low-suction or dense backgrounds may need an appropriate bonding aid or specified system. Avoid applying backing plasters to frozen, saturated or overheated substrates.
For quality control, supervisors should record:
- substrate type and condition
- background preparation used
- product and batch details
- coat thickness
- weather conditions at application
- protection measures in place
Control Suction, Thickness and Movement
Most cracking comes from uneven drying, excessive thickness, poor key or movement in the background. Backing plasters should be selected for the substrate and used within the manufacturer’s stated thickness range. Building out deep areas in one heavy pass increases shrinkage risk and can delay drying before finishing.
Where backgrounds change, such as blockwork meeting concrete, reinforce vulnerable junctions with suitable mesh as specified. Keep beads, stops and movement details cleanly fixed so the backing coat is not forced to bridge weak points.
Float and Set: What Supervisors Should Look For
“Float and set” is the traditional two-stage approach used to prepare a flat, firm background for finishing. The float coat is the backing coat, ruled and floated to line and level. It provides the strength, suction control and surface plane. The set coat is the finishing plaster applied after the float coat has firmed and dried sufficiently.
In mixed weather, do not rush from float to set. If the backing coat is still holding excess moisture, finishing too early can trap damp and increase cracking or shelling risk. If it has dried too quickly, suction may be too high and the finish can tear or craze.
On-Site Quality and Safety Checks
Keep materials dry, off the ground and protected from frost. Use clean water, clean mixing tubs and correct ratios; over-wet mixes may spread easily but are more prone to shrinkage.
Safety reminders for supervisors: manage dust when opening bags, enforce eye and hand protection, keep access platforms stable, and avoid trailing leads or hoses around wet work areas. In cold, wet or windy spells, sheet and protect fresh backing coats without sealing in condensation. Maintain ventilation, but avoid direct draughts that dry the surface faster than the body of the coat.
