Match the Bead to the Background
For internal skim work, galvanised angle beads remain a common choice, but they must suit the environment. In damp-prone areas, exposed blockwork, or locations likely to suffer knocks, consider stainless steel, PVC, or higher-impact trims where specified.
Check bead length, wing width, nose profile, and coating condition before fixing. Bent, twisted, or poorly stored beads should not be “made to work”; they usually telegraph through the finish or create a wavy arris.
Setting Out for Straight Lines
Straight beads need straight setting out. Supervisors should ensure operatives use levels, straightedges, laser lines, or string lines rather than judging by eye. Fixings or dabs should be frequent enough to prevent bounce when plaster is ruled or trowelled.
A practical quality check is to sight along the bead before plastering, then test with a straightedge across adjoining planes. Door reveals, window heads, columns, and long external corners deserve extra attention because small errors become obvious under lighting.
Common Mistakes and Corrective Actions
A frequent mistake is mixing bead types across the same elevation, causing slight changes in arris shape. Correct this before plastering by standardising the trim profile for each area.
Another issue is under-fixing. If a bead moves under light hand pressure, stop and refix it; do not rely on the plaster coat to hold it steady.
Overloaded plaster around the nose can leave proud edges. The correction is controlled application, clean ruling, and checking the arris while the material is still workable.
Safety and Handling on Site
Cut beads with suitable snips or a guarded cutting tool, and manage sharp offcuts immediately. Gloves and eye protection are sensible when cutting metal trims, especially overhead or in confined reveals.
Store beads flat, dry, and off the floor to prevent corrosion, twisting, and site damage. Good storage is not housekeeping for its own sake; it protects the tool-like accuracy that beads and trims provide.
