Substrate Prep Mistakes That Catch Out Good Plasterers

Mistake 1: Treating Every Background the Same

A common apprentice error is assuming all walls need the same prep. High-suction backgrounds such as old brick, blockwork or dry skim can pull moisture too quickly, leading to dragging, poor adhesion and crazing. Low-suction or dense surfaces, including painted masonry or concrete, may need a bonding agent or mechanical key.

Teach apprentices to test suction before mixing. A light water flick tells plenty: if it disappears instantly, suction control is needed; if it sits on the surface, check adhesion and key. Remove dust, grease, loose paint and friable material before applying any plaster system.

Safety note: Use eye protection and an appropriate mask when scraping, sanding or brushing down, particularly on older properties where unknown coatings may be present.

Mistake 2: Rushing Product Choice and Application

Wrong product selection is another avoidable issue. Gypsum, lime, cement-based backing coats and specialist primers all behave differently. Check the manufacturer’s data sheet, not just the bag name.

When mentoring, explain why background, thickness, drying conditions and finish coat all matter. Apply bonding agents evenly and let them reach the correct tack or dryness. Do not over-water PVA or rely on it where a grit primer or specified system is required.

During application, maintain consistent thickness and avoid overworking material that has begun to firm up. Apprentices should learn that timing is part of the material, not separate from it.

Mistake 3: Poor Finishing Conditions and Aftercare

Finishing failures often come from conditions: draughts, heat guns, direct sunlight or forced drying. These can cause cracking, weak surfaces and uneven set.

Keep rooms ventilated but avoid rapid drying. Protect fresh plaster from knocks, frost and excessive heat. Before decoration, ensure the plaster is fully dry and advise mist coats rather than strong vinyl paint straight onto new skim.

Safety note: Keep walkways clear of buckets, leads and offcuts. Wet plaster, dust and tools on boards are a simple slip or trip hazard, especially when apprentices are moving quickly.
